Life Series - Happiness
In this Life Series post it is about 'Happiness' , This TED Lecture Matthieu Ricard: The habits of happiness provides a lot of deep, honest and practical facts of perception and reality of state of happiness.
From the transcript of the talk, posting some interesting (inspiring) lines worth reading every day.
- One of the most common ones is happiness and pleasure. But, if you look at the characteristics of those two, pleasure is contingent upon time, upon its object, upon the place. It is something that -- changes of nature.
- we know a lot of people who, in very difficult circumstances, manage to keep serenity, inner strength, inner freedom, confidence
- And so, if we look from our own experience, anger, hatred, jealousy, arrogance, obsessive desire, strong grasping, they don't leave us in such a good state after we have experienced it
- Likewise, behind every single thought there is the bare consciousness, pure awareness. This is the nature
- A kind of sense of inner freedom as opposite to intense grasping and obsession.
- We spend surprisingly little time taking care of what matters most -- the way our mind functions -- which, again, is the ultimate thing that determines the quality of our experience

Life Series - Success
In this post on Redefining Success in Life. Please watch inspiring talk Alain de Botton: A kinder, gentler philosophy of success.
Reposting inspiring lines from the transcript. All credits to the presenter
People take things personally !!
And some of the reason for that is that people take what happens to them extremely personally. They own their success. But they also own their failure.
What is Success ?Here's an insight that I've had about success. You can't be successful at everything. We hear a lot of talk about work-life balance. Nonsense. You can't have it all. You can't. So any vision of success has to admit what it's losing out on, where the element of loss is. I think any wise life will accept, as I say, that there is going to be an element where we are not succeeding.
Redefine the Definition of Your SuccessSo what I want to argue for is not that we should give up on our ideas of success, but we should make sure that they are our own. We should focus in on our ideas. and make sure that we own them, that we are truly the authors of our own ambitions. Because it's bad enough, not getting what you want, but it's even worse to have an idea of what it is you want and find out at the end of a journey, that it isn't, in fact, what you wanted all along.....
Hope you enjoyed this talk !!!
Life Series - Relationships
Life has been fantastic last few years. I'm going to do a series of posts covering
- Success in Life
- Ethics and Values in Life
- Relationships
I got my enlightenment from TED and Quora. All my findings and opinions are based on my readings / experiences in my life.
Psychological impact of Relationships, Life. I enjoyed watching TED talk on Helen Fisher: Why we love, why we cheat
Interesting points shared by the presenter. I am reposting lines from the transcript of the conversation. All credits goes to the Presenter
- As a truck driver once said to me, he said, "The world had a new center, and that center was Mary Anne."
- George Bernard Shaw said it a little differently. He said, "Love consists of overestimating the differences between one woman and another."
- But the main characteristics of romantic love are craving
- The motor in your brain begins to crank, and you want this person
- The second of these three brain systems is romantic love: that elation, obsession of early love. And the third brain system is attachment: that sense of calm and security you can feel for a long-term partner
- Dopamine is associated with romantic love
There's all kinds of reasons that you fall in love with one person rather than another.
- Timing is important
- Proximity is important
- Mystery is important
- You fall in love with somebody who's somewhat mysterious, in part because mystery elevates dopamine in the brain, probably pushes you over that threshold to fall in love
- You fall in love with somebody who fits within what I call your "love map," an unconscious list of traits that you build in childhood as you grow up
- And I also think that you gravitate to certain people, actually, with somewhat complementary brain systems. And that's what I'm now contributing to this
One more excellent talk on
Hope you enjoyed reading it!!
